3PL:
Third Party Logistics. A third party logistics and/or service provider who acts on behalf of the shipper or carrier.

AAR:
Association of American Railroads.

Air Bag:
Inflatable sack used to fill void space or provide containment in railcars, trucks, trailers or containers.
Backhaul:
Shippers moving in the direction of the light flow of traffic.
Blocking and Bracing:
Wooden, metal or other approved support to keep shipments in place on railcars or within containers and trailers.
Box Car:
Enclosed car used for general service and for freight that must be protected from the weather.
Bulkhead:
1. Term used to describe a positionable wall in rail cars. 2. Corrugated dunnage used to fill space or create a locking point in combination with an air bag.
Container:
Receptacle that resembles a truck trailer that is lifted onto flatcars without the chassis. Most containers are 20, 43 or 53 feet in length.
Conventional Car:
Intermodal single platform flatcar for conventional piggyback loading.
Drop Filler:
Accordion style corrugated used as a void fill.
Deramp:
Lifting of intermodal containers or trailers off intermodal flatcars.
Dunnage:
Materials used to fill space.
Flat Car:
Freight car that has a floor without any housing or body above.
F.O.B:
Freight On Board.
FRA:
Federal Railroad Administration.
Freight:
Cargo or goods carried by a vehicle.
Freight Bill:
Statement given to a customer of charges for traansportation.
Hazardous Material: Haz Mat
Substance or combination that because of its quantity, concentration, physical or chemical characteristics, may cause or significantly pose a substantial hazard to human health or the environment.
Hump:
The connecting of two or more rail cars.
Intermodal:
Mode of rail transportation that covers the multi-modal transportation of trailers and/or containers by ship, rail and truck.
LTL:
Less Than Truckload.
Loss and Damage:
"Normal" day-to-day losses and damages as a result of moving freight such as vandalism, damage due to shipping derailments and accidents.
Piggyback:
Transportation of a highway trailer on a railroad flat car.
Ramp:
Lifting of intermodal containers or trailers onto intermodal flatcars.
Saddlepak:
Product term used to describe corrugated dunnage use in product protection of single skids positioned in the center of a trailer, container or rail car.
Spur:
The track extending out from the mail track.
Trailer:
Rectangular shaped box with permanent wheels attached.
Transit:
Time that a unit is in transport from origin to destination.
TL:
Truck Load. Shipment that fill a container or truck trailer to its maximum capacity, either weight or volume.
Void Viller:
Materials used to take up space in boxcars, trailers or containers.
